CHAPTER NINE

Thor

That stubborn, gorgeous little fool! What if she runs to the woods and the wolves find her!

How could she have been so incredibly stupid? It was freezing outside and she didn’t even have proper clothing. She would be dead before sunrise if he didn’t find her.

Thor was furious with himself. How could he have let her escape like that? The woman was not in her right mind and had no idea what kind of dangers could lurk behind the corner. He had allowed her a moment’s head start to sate her need to run – every woman needed to fight what she knew was right in her heart, Thor figured – but the strong winds and the high snow and the darkness had made tracking her harder than he had anticipated.

Annoyingly so.

The vital thing was that she wouldn’t run into Haldis Fjolnirsdottir. That evil, bitter bear was always trying to create problems and manipulate others around her. And although the clan knew she was a troublemaker, she could still somehow get to them sometimes.

It is easy if one speaks words that many wish to hear, he thought glumly.

What was worse, Haldis hated human women above everything.

For some reason she didn’t seem to mind human men, but every time a Viking bear came home with an abducted maiden found as a bride from across the sea, the woman tried to convince the village that the bride was a danger to them all.

The women would come as spies, she often claimed. They would infiltrate into the settlements and later bring their southern warriors along to finish off their proud people, along with scores of wolves and other such nonsense concocted by an unhealthy mind.

What must she think of Isabella then! Wolves are a danger, indeed, but it is not my woman bringing them here.

There was something else that made the situation even worse. Once, when they had been youngsters, Haldis had tried to seduce Thor. She had in fact been a rather attractive girl and Thor had almost fallen for her, the folly of youth making him think that perhaps she was the one he was destined to claim.

For one summer they had been rather close but before fall they parted ways. Haldis had been manipulative and controlling, but even in his young age Thor could understand that what he felt was not true affection.

Although it had already been years ago, Thor knew Haldis had not forgiven him for it and her obsession ran deep. After all, she had almost become mate to the future chief of the clan – no small honor!

Thor realized Isabella was in great danger. If Haldis found her, she would do everything to turn the village against Thor’s wife-to-be.

I should have gotten her pregnant long before we got home. I should have explained everything to her.

Thor ran to the house where Haldis and her kin lived. It was a rather modest building with no outhouses. Everything was quiet in the hut. Too quiet.

He circled the house but saw no candlelight nor heard any sounds.
